Common Core State Standards for Mathematics

Grade(s) 5 resources related to the following standard:
Measurement and Data
Represent and interpret data.
2. Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (1/2, 1/4, 1/8). Use operations on fractions for this grade to solve problems involving information presented in line plots. For example, given different measurements of liquid in identical beakers, find the amount of liquid each beaker would contain if the total amount in all the beakers were redistributed equally.

In this lesson activity students collect data on reaction time using either a ruler dropping experiment or one of four interactive applications that test reaction speed on the computer. Students then determine the median of their trials and graph their results on a scatterplot. The data can then be analyzed for students to determine: "How does my reaction time compare to other students?" A student worksheet is included (pdf format) and links to four reaction time tests are provided.

In this article from "The Statistics Teacher Network", volume 79 pages 2-5, Jessica Cohen explains where and how Statistics and Probability fit into the Common Core State Standards. Cohen explains grade by grade where statistics fits into the CCSS standards and then explains how probability fits in even though there are no probability standards prior to Grade 6.
