Measurement and Real World connections

This discussion is part of a collection:Teaching Measurement in Grades 3-5

Upper elementary students get some practical measuring experiences in two resources – Scuba Diving in Belize and Real World Investigations in this 3-5 PD Measurement collection.

What lessons do you suggest we give our consumer-oriented tweens?

Have the students use grid paper and sketch out their bedroom (this means they need to measure it) then they can rearrange the furniture on their design however they like. The next part of the challenge is that they are going to change the paint color and the flooring in the room (hypothetically of course) and will need to find out how much paint and carpeting they will need. You can pull weekly ads or research online to find the cost of paint and flooring. This can be done as a group challenge with every group being given the dimensions for a pretend room or this can be done individually as a home/school project.
