Fluency with Basic Addition

This article, from the NCTM journal Teaching Children Mathematics, examines what it means to be fluent with basic addition facts and suggests activities that teachers can use to prepare students for fluency. The author explains that applying known facts to derive unknown facts results in efficiency, flexibility, and an understanding of number combinations for young students.
